Youth Poverty Relief
Elephant Thoughts started as an international development organization serving Northern India and Nepal.
Our original mandate was to support education in remote Himalayan Villages including:
Providing infrastructure (classrooms, libraries, toilets, water systems)
Sponsoring local people to attend accredited teachers colleges
Providing books, computers, resources
Supporting staff salaries
Providing lunch programs
Running programs aimed at empowering girls
To this day we continue to support projects in countries like Nepal, India, Nicaragua, China, Tanzania, and Ghana to name a few.
Our philosophy of international development is simple:
- We offer resources not solutions. Community members know far better what the proper solutions to their development and poverty issues are.
- We do not pick and choose our own projects. We look for local people doing incredible work with few resources and we support their work.
- We do not create long-term dependency. All projects are on a project-by-project basis.
All projects we undertake are weighed against the following criteria:
- Must support education.
- Should support better environmental stewardship.
- Should aid in the preservation and celebration of distinct cultures.
- Should support the empowerment of girls.
- Is sustainable with local resources after the project is complete.
- Local community members are the true workforce. We are only support.
